Biographical Information and Writing Process of Peggy Parish
* Born July 24, 1927 in Manning, South Carolina.
*As a child, she loved reading and writing.
* She attended The University of South Carolina and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
*After graduating she turned to teaching. She taught creative dance and third grade.
*She later moved to New York to teach at an experimental school in Manhattan and found a creative environment that flourished. She was there for fifteen years, and then began writing.
*Her first book published was My Golden Book of Manners published in 1961.
*With the help of a child´s parent who was an editor, she came into contact with an editor at Harper who helped her improve as a storyteller.
*Always finding ways to develop her writing, Peggy created the character Amelia Bedelia and published twelve books on her.
*The idea of Amelia Bedelia came from interacting with her students at the Dalton School who took she said very literally. Through many of her books, Peggy teachers kids about homonyms and figurative language.
*Peggy also wrote mystery novels and arts and craft books. All together she published forty books.
*Aside from writing, Peggy also held workshops to train teachers and wrote book reviews.
*After returning to her native town in South Carolina, Peggy passed away on November 19, 1988 at the age of 61.
