Bibliography: Five Books Read
Parish, P. (1963). Amelia bedelia. New York: Haper & Row.
Amelia Bedelia is a book about a house Keeper who comes to clean the house while Mr. and Mrs. Rogers are away. She was left with a to-do list, and so she starts to “dust the furniture”, “Draw the drapes”, and more things. She takes the chores a little too seriously because she actually puts dusting powder on the furniture, and actually draws the drapes on a sheet of paper. This book is full of idioms and how Amelia Bedelia takes them seriously. Mrs. Rogers was furious when she got home, but Amelia Bedelia´s cooking changes things and Mrs. Rogers decides she needs to be more specific and literal when making to-do lists.
Parish, P., & Sweat, L. (2004). Amelia bedelia goes camping. Greenwillow Books.
Amelia Bedelia goes camping is a book about how Amelia Bedelia goes camping with Mr. and Mrs. Rogers. She is asked to pitch a tent but it´s not the same as throwing it in the bushes. They go fishing, she is asked to catch a fish but she actually gets in the water to catch the fish with her hands and lets the fish go. She is told to start a fire, and put some coffee on the fire but she takes the expression literally and pours coffee on the grill. She is asked to row a boat, but she put the boats into rows. She once again cooks a tasty meal and all if forgotten. She makes the camping trip and adventure.
Peggy Parish. (1976). Good work, amelia bedelia. New York: HarperCollins.
Good Work Amelia Bedelia is a book about how Amelia Bedelia is given a list of chores to do while Mr. and Mrs. Rogers are out. She is told to make white bread. She does not put the mixture in the oven, and she is sitting down expecting the mixture to raise….literally off the table. She decided the pan was too heavy and attached it to a string and helped it rise. She was asked to make a sponge cake, and she actually put a sponge in to make a cake. She was asked to call someone to patch the front door screen, but she decided she would do it herself with fabric patches. She was asked to make a chicken dinner, and she served what chickens actually eat for dinner. Her butterscotch cake saved the day. Once again Amelia Bedelia surprised Mr. and Mrs. Rogers by taking all too literally.
Parish, H. (2002). Good driving, Amelia Bedelia. New York: Haper & Row.
Good Driving Amelia Bedelia is a book about how Amelia Bedilia goes for a drive for Mr. Rogers. He was in for the ride of his life. She follows his directions once again too literally and gets them in trouble. When Mr. Rogers tells her to bear left at the fork in the road, Amelia Bedelia looks for forks and spoons and then turns right to avoid the bear. After they get home from the drive, Amelia is surprised with a surprise birthday party.
Parish, H. (2007). Amelia Bedelia, Rocket Scientist?. New York: Greenwillow Books.
Amelia Bedelia, Rocket Scientist? This book is about how Amelia Bedelia helps out at the school science fair. It starts out by Mr. Rogers asks who was the rocket scientist who put his glasses in the dishwasher? Amelia Bedelia told him that he has instructed her to put all the glasses in the dishwasher. Amelia Bedelia then goes to the goes to help Mrs. Edwards with the science fair. In this book Amelia Bedelia once again takes things too literally. She was also asked to become a judge at the science fair. When a boy said his volcano would explode in ten minutes, Amelia Bedelia said “Take cover!” She finds UFO´s with a "flying saucer" and finds a mad scientist.
